ABOUT BREVITY For nearly a decade now, Brevity has published well-known and emerging writers working in the extremely brief (750 words or less) essay form. Though still committed to the mission of publishing new writers, Brevity has enjoyed an embarrassment of recent riches, including the work of two Pulitzer prize finalists, numerous NEA fellows, Pushcart winners, Best American authors, and writers from India, Spain, and Japan. Authors published in Brevity include Lia Purpura, Terse Svoboda, John Calderazzo,, Brenda Miller, Aimee Nezhukumatathil, Robin Hemley, Lee Martin, Rebecca McClanahan, Robin Behn, Abby Frucht, Barbara Hurd, Bret Lott, Ira Sukrungruang, and Diana Hume George. Work from Brevity has been anthologized and reprinted in venues including Creative Nonfiction, Fourth Genre, Utne Reader, Judith Kitchen’s Short Takes anthology, the Best Creative Nonfiction anthology from W.W. Norton, and many recent writing textbooks. Robert Atwan's Best American Essays 2006 cites Creative Nonfiction's Best of Brevity issue as one of the five notable special issues of the year. Gauging the subscriber base for an online journal is admittedly an inexact science, but over the past year Brevity has averaged 3,000 visitors per month, or 12,000 visitors per issue. A better indicator of readership loyalty might be our regular mailing list. More than 3000 individual readers have entered information into an e-mail form asking to be alerted each time a new issue is published (see below if you'd like to join).
