"I love the magazine, and I wish it were more frequent. The writers in it are usually superb, and I hope to see much more of them."

Christmas on the Palisades
An Interview
with author Adam Gussow

Creative nonfiction appeals to Adam Gussow because of “its proximity to the rhythms of actual life.” This is certainly true for "Christmas on the Palisades," as it was originally drafted as a straightforward affidavit and not intended to be an essay. Gussow’s inspiration came in part from a past student with a background in law who “was in the (annoying) habit of structuring every response paper as a legal brief, with numbered and lettered sections and subsections.”

The remainder of Gussow’s inspiration arose from frustration and anger. After receiving his first speeding ticket in a “notorious speed trap,” Gussow wanted to fight back. Although he hopes that the essay will make readers laugh, he also hopes to reach others who have “been stung in this particular way and thought, I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore.”

Gussow is still waiting for a decision to be made on his case. As he admits to exceeding the speed limit in his affidavit, he doesn’t expect the ticket to be dismissed. However, he does hope that the fine will be reduced. In any event, Gussow agrees that “writing...well is the best revenge.”

Gussow’s advice for other writers is simple: “Follow your bliss.” His driving philosophy is not as free-spirited, however; Gussow recommends following all posted speed limits. For someone who avoids the fast lane of the highway, Gussow definitely likes fast cars, though; his dream cars include a Ferrari, Corvette, and Lamborghini.
