ABOUT THE COURSE

The Five R's of Creative Nonfiction
Lee Gutkind
9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
$175 registration fee includes a 4-issue subscription to Creative Nonfiction.

Creative nonfiction is the genre of dramatic true stories, told using scenes, dialogue, detailed descriptions and other techniques usually employed by poets and fiction writers. Whether the format is memoir, essay or narrative journalism, creative nonfiction captures real life with the power of cinema and the integrity of fact. It allows a writer to employ the diligence of a reporter, the shifting voices and viewpoints of a novelist, the refined wordplay of a poet and the analytical modes of the essayist.

In this intense, day-long course, Lee Gutkind will define the genre and present all the basic elements of creative nonfiction, including structure, voice, tone, writing in scenes and using background information and descriptions. The course will also include a discussion of ethical issues inherent to nonfiction writing, as well as tips for marketing finished work.

Learn the basics from the master—the writer and editor who has helped make creative nonfiction the fastest-growing genre in the publishing industry. Lee Gutkind has pioneered the teaching of creative nonfiction, conducting workshops and presenting readings throughout the United States. Gutkind is the author or editor of more than a dozen books, including The Best Creative Nonfiction, Vol.1 and Almost Human: Making Robots Think, featured on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
