Carolyn Kremers

Carolyn Kremers is currently an assistant professor at Kuskokwim campus of the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, which is located in Bethel, a riverine town of 4,500 people, 125 miles inland from Tunutak. She taught in Tunutak for two years, then moved to Fairbanks to earn an M.F.A. in Creative Writing. After being a visiting professor at UAF in 1991-92, she returned to the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, working mostly with Yup'il Eskimo students. She lives alone in a little foam dome that tilts several inches into the tundra, and is learning to speak the Yup'ik language. In 1991, her manuscript Place of the Pretend People, of which her piece here is an opening chapter, received a Special Citation from the PEN/Jerard Fund Award for emerging women writers of nonfiction.
