Moritz Thomsen

Moritz Thomsen, born in 1919, left a failing hog farm to join the Peace Corps at age 53 and wrote a fine book, "Living Poor" (1971) about his experiences in coastal Ecuador. He later returned to that country and, with an Ecuadorian partner, attempted to hack a working farm out of the jungle, a doomed effort beautifully recorded in "The Farm on the River of Emeralds" (1978). He was also the author of "The Saddest Pleasure" (1990), an account of his soul-searching journey through Brazil and up the Amazon. He died in Guayaquil, Ecuador, in 1991.
