$1,000 Mistakes Essay Prize Awarded

Creative Nonfiction is pleased to announce our fall issue, "Mistakes," featuring the winner and runner-up of an essay contest on the theme, which was chosen by readers.

Suzanne Roberts' “The Same Story” was selected by the magazine's editors for the $1,000 first place prize from more than 800 essays submitted. In this compelling essay, Roberts illuminates, through the story of her unintended pregnancy at age twenty-four, the ways in which her mistake has taken on new meaning over time.

Joe Oestreich's $500 runner-up essay, “The Botch Job,” considers the bad tattoo the author got spontaneously years ago as a fresh college dropout on tour with his band.

The issue also includes new stories about mistakes both political and personal, serious and less so, by Stephanie Bane, Karen Donley-Hayes, Gladys Haunton, Catherine Musemeche, Patricia A. Nugent, Bill Pitts, Arthur Plotnik, Carol Fisher Saller, and Ennis Smith. Learn more about the issue here.
