A great interview session will give you the in-depth information you need to create fully realized characters and narratives in your writing. Whether you're just starting out or are in the midst of research for your writing, veteran radio and television host Paul Guggenheimer can help you practice and perfect interview techniques that will help you get the job done right.

Paul Guggenheimer's resume includes interviews with political figures like HILLARY CLINTON, AL GORE, RALPH NADER, and JOHN LEWIS; artists including RANDY NEWMAN, PETER FRAMPTON, and JOHNNY MATHIS; and stars such as KEVIN COSTNERISABELLA ROSSELLINI, and GEORGE TAKEI.

Through this one-day, intensive workshop you will learn how to become an effective interviewer. Paul will share his techniques for

  • Interview preparation and research
  • Gaining the trust of your interviewee
  • Staying in the moment and really listening (not as easy as it seems)
  • Handling a testy interviewee
  • Taking the plunge with challenging and controversial questions, and more!

Breakfast and coffee will be provided. At noon, the workshop will break for lunch at the surrounding restaurants. A small kitchenette is also available for those who would prefer to bring a lunch from home.

Paul Guggenheimer has been a host and interviewer on public radio and television for more than a decade, including most recently at WESA, Pittsburgh's NPR station. From 2012 until 2017, Paul was the host of “Essential Pittsburgh,” a live daily talk and interview show that won three Pennsylvania Associated Press Broadcasters Association 1st Place Awards including the 2013 Award for Best Major Market News or Sports Talk Program. In 2016, Pittsburgh Magazine's editors chose Paul Guggenheimer on Essential Pittsburgh as “Best Lunchtime Listen.”

Paul also served as anchor for election and special news coverage at WESA, as well as moderator for live community forums including an October 2014 panel discussion on police/community relations that won a Pittsburgh Black Media Federation 1st Place Award.

Paul’s television work includes guest hosting “NightTalk” for WPXI’s Pittsburgh Cable News Channel as well as a “Dances with Wolves” 20th anniversary special with Kevin Costner for South Dakota Public Broadcasting.
