Instructor: Melissa Petro

Everyone experiences personal difficulty at some point in their lives. As writers, we often find that we want to write about loss, grief, or trauma in order to both understand how our personal narrative has changed us, and to relate our changed self to the world. The course will present strategies for strong creative nonfiction writing about these subjects, and discuss cross-disciplinary research in creating trauma narratives. Each week will include a written lecture, specific reading recommendations tied to the lecture, and a writing assignment.

Week 1: Why Write About Grief, Loss, and Trauma
Week 2: Writing the Tough Stuff
Week 3: Creating Complicated Characters
Week 4: From Truth to Art
Week 5: So What?
Week 6: Language
Week 7: Integrating Research into our Writing
Week 8: What Happens When our Writing Meets the World?
Week 9: Revision
Week 10: Publishing, Practice & Everything Else

* US residents will receive a complimentary 4-issue subscription to Creative Nonfiction with their online class registration (or a 4-issue extension to their existing subscription). Students outside the US can receive a free copy of the ebook Creating Nonfiction, or can choose to receive a 4-issue print subscription for the cost of shipping fees. We regret that we are not able to supply complimentary digital subscriptions for international students at this time.

If you are an international student who would like a print subscription instead of an ebook, please contact Matt Spindler at spindler@creativenonfiction.org after you register.
